What are anti-stalking alerts?

Anti-stalking alerts are a built-in privacy feature of the Apple Find My and Google’s Find Hub networks. Their main job is to prevent unknown trackers from tagging along with you unnoticed.

When a tracker that isn't paired with your phone moves with you without its owner nearby, the network steps in:

• Get an alert: You’ll receive a notification letting you know that an unknown tracker is moving with you.

• Find by sound: If the tracker stays near you, it will start beeping so you can figure out where it’s hidden. You can also ring the unknown tag from your phone, pinpoint its location, and follow a few simple steps to disable it.

So why is my own Chipolo chirping at me?

If anti-stalking alerts exist to flag unknown tags, why does your own tracker beep randomly? It usually comes down to your Bluetooth connection and Location services.

If you switch Bluetooth off, the connection between your phone and your tracker breaks. When you pick up your keys and head out, your phone no longer recognizes the tracker as yours. The network assumes it’s a mystery tag following you and triggers an alert.

The easy fix is to keep Bluetooth turned on. It won’t drain your battery, but it will save you from unexpected chirps. It’s also important to keep Location services turned on to ensure the location of your items is updated regularly.

Pro tip: If you share everyday items with your family, you can tag them and share the attached Chipolo through the Find My or Find Hub app. Once shared, your family members can also locate the item from their own phones, plus, their devices will recognize the tracker as familiar, silencing any mystery beeps for good.
